Buckwheat
Buckwheat grains or buckwheat “groats” are a soft and satisfying wholefood which lend themselves to a wide range of culinary uses. Feel like mixing things up a little more? Try using this delicious raw organic buckwheat as a substitute for the usual rice, pasta or barley-based “stodge” options. And not just your brain and tongue but your whole body may thank you. Buckwheat grains are filling, rich in vegan protein, loaded with complex carbohydrates and deliver a healthy dose of various minerals like magnesium and iron too!
What is buckwheat grain?
Despite the name, Buckwheat grain (or groats) is not actually a wheat, and is related to sorrel, knotweed and rhubarb. Buckwheat itself naturally has no gluten containing ingredients, and makes for an ideal natural alternative to barley, rice and wheat. It’s very filling and richly satisfying, delivering a well-rounded, lightly nutty and very full umami taste to the palate. Nutritionally, buckwheat is a good source of protein, complex carbohydrates, magnesium and iron.
Uses for buckwheat groats
Buckwheat lends itself to heaps of tasty uses. Try it as the main supporting role for any of your favourite Italian dishes, rich tomato sauces or moist and creamy dishes of any kind. But there’s a whole range of other recipes that are perfect for these little groats. You’ll find heaps of buckwheat recipes online, which pair it with everything from salads to soups, stews and casseroles. You can even use it to make top-notch porridge. Buckwheat has such a lovely and versatile flavour, we strongly recommend our beloved UK and European customers explore all these great culinary avenues!

4 Ingredient Spicy Linseed Crackers
This is technically two healthy buckwheat recipes in one. The primary goal of this creation, courtesy of our great grainy, brainy guru Cat Elliott, is to make robust and beautifully textured crackers. But it can also be tweaked, using the tips at the bottom, to make a glorious vegan pizza base too. So please enjoy creating and customising both!
